In March, 2014 my family and I went with some friends to Belize. We spent an
unbelievable week living right next to the ocean on the island of Ambergris Caye, the largest of the 200-plus cayes (islands) located off the Belize coast. The beautiful six bedroom, six bath home we stayed at while we there was a tropical paradise located just outside of San Pedro, the only town on the island.
Golf carts were the preferred method of transportation on the island. And since we consumed vast amounts of margaritas and mucho bottles of Belikin Beer, (the only beer brewed in Belize), we had to be very careful because DAGCWI (Driving A Golf Cart While Intoxicated) is a crime. We dined on everything the island had to offer, but especially enjoyed the conch fritters, the conch salads, the conch ceviche, and conch soup.
Our host for the trip was Crazy Eddie. He is a diving instructor and went out of his way to make sure our tropical vacation was perfect in every way. On one beautiful, hazy, tropical day, Crazy Eddie and I took off in a golf cart and Eddie took me on an unbelievable tour of Ambergris Caye, (a tour I will never forget). While the rest ofthe group was touring Mayan ruins, Eddie and I were getting ruined, but in a good way. Eight hours, and many Belikin beers later, (which by that time we “Be Likin”), the idea of Big Conch Tees had evolved from a random drunken discussion thread to a plan of action. I think that happened sometime before Eddie shimmied up a palm tree at a San Pedro bar and I drove the golf cart safely back to our home base.
The vacation was all about the conch, the ocean; the ocean breezes; the snorkeling and the scuba diving (Ambergris Caye is located ½ mile from the Barrier Reef); and meeting the local islanders, especially our host (and friend) Crazy Eddie, and his sidekick, George. I hope you enjoy our tasteful (or tasteless depending on your point of view) conch cartoon creations. As Crazy Eddie says “Conch makes me Smile”.
